This disease was first identified by Dr Tomas Addison in 1885.<\/p>\n<p>Addison&#8217;s affects both men and women and has serious life-threatening complications if left untreated. Though children are affected, a majority of affected persons are in the 3rd to 5th decades of life.<\/p>\n<h3>Symptoms<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/sattvam.net\/beta\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Addisons-3.jpg\" alt=\"Addison&#039;s 3\" width=\"194\" height=\"259\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-557\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sattvam.net\/beta\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Addisons-3.jpg 194w, https:\/\/sattvam.net\/beta\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Addisons-3-140x188.jpg 140w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 194px) 100vw, 194px\" \/><\/h3>\n<p><strong>The symptoms of Addison&#8217;s disease develop slowly over a period of time and the patient may show some or all of these symptoms:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Fatigue which grows worse over a period of time.<\/li>\n<li>Weight loss in spite of eating well<\/li>\n<li>Muscle weakness which doesn&#8217;t improve<\/li>\n<li>Patchy discoloration of the skin most visible on scars; skin folds; pressure points such as the elbows, knees, knuckles, and toes; lips; and mucous membranes.<\/li>\n<li>Low blood pressure<\/li>\n<li>Cravings for salt<\/li>\n<li>Nausea, vomiting and diarrhea are seen in 50% of patients.<\/li>\n<li>Irritability<\/li>\n<li>Depression<\/li>\n<li>Low blood sugars<\/li>\n<li>Moderate Hair loss<\/li>\n<li>Irregularity or sudden stoppage of menstrual cycle.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Occasionally, untreated Addison&#8217;s can present itself with sudden onset of symptoms (Addisonian crisis):<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Pain in lower back, abdomen and legs<\/li>\n<li>Severe vomiting and diarrhea leading to dehydration<\/li>\n<li>Very low blood pressures<\/li>\n<li>Loss of consciousness<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Physical stress, injury, any infection or illness can precipitate an addisonian crisis which needs emergency management<\/p>\n<h3>Types and Causes<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/sattvam.net\/beta\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Addisons.jpg\" alt=\"Addison&#039;s\" width=\"259\" height=\"194\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-560\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sattvam.net\/beta\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Addisons.jpg 259w, https:\/\/sattvam.net\/beta\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Addisons-250x188.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 259px) 100vw, 259px\" \/><\/h3>\n<p>Near total or total destruction of both adrenal glands results in loss of both cortisol and aldosterone secretion causing classical Addison&#8217;s disease.<\/p>\n<p>Yet, most commonly, one of the two types predominate.<\/p>\n<p><b>Primary adrenal insufficiency<\/b>\u00a0is one type of Addison&#8217;s disease, resulting from the body&#8217;s immune system attacking its own cells since it fails to identify the adrenals as part of the body&#8217;s own cells (auto-immune).<\/p>\n<p><b>Secondary adrenal insufficiency<\/b>\u00a0is the second type of Addison&#8217;s disease.<\/p>\n<p>The functions of the adrenals are very much under the control of a higher hormone controlling gland called &#8216;the pituitary&#8217;. This gland is situated deep within the brain and secretions from it regulate the activity of the adrenals. Diseases affecting the pituitary cause reduced activation of the adrenals, producing insufficiency.<\/p>\n<p>Sudden stoppage of corticosteroids used in the treatment of medical conditions like asthma or arthritis can also precipitate secondary adrenal insufficiency.<\/p>\n<p><b>Homeopathic Treatment<\/b><br \/>\nChronic and recurring Addison&#8217;s disease can be treated with success using homeopathy.
